Pastel, the perfect blue

A history of the Precious Blue wealth
Men and nature ever relatedwined… As early as the Neolithic, men understood that the plant (Isatis tinctoria) could be used to make the blue color. Over the centuries, pastel has been grown as the only means to produce blue coloring: the Western blue. Between the 13th and 15th century, pastel brought wealth and boosted the strong development of the Midi-Pyrénées region. For the next 200 years, both pastel growers and merchants produced the blue pigment which was exported and used all over Europe. That economic wealth is today clearly evidenced in the unique heritage built at that time: dovecotes, castles, private mansions, churches, houses…
Towards Pastel
What is left today of that blue and that land of plenty? Historians, enthusiasts, chemists and colorists have gradually resumed growing the Isatis Tinctoria and produced the well-known pigment to bring it back to former glory. On a smaller scale, for one’s pleasure and for the sake of handing over one’s passion for tradition, the agranat (the powdered pigment) is back to be used for dying, painting, drawing…and also for enhancing one’s natural beauty!
A highly wear-resistant dye as well as a fungicide and a beauty product:  the pastel properties are manyfold!
A great playground
The pays de cocagne is also the land for kids: watersports areas, discovering Angora rabbits at the Angolaine animal farm, strolling through the Martels garden, canoe-kayaking on the Agout , creative workshops with pastel, adventure climb trails (accrobranches)…
